Successful control of clothing moths requires a systematic approach. Work through these steps in sequence:

Step 1: Taking stock and inspection

Completely empty the entire wardrobe. Examine each individual garment carefully for holes, silk, and larvae. Pay special attention to:

  • Winter clothing made of wool and cashmere
  • Rarely worn formal clothing
  • Fur collars, fur hats, and feather beds
  • Carpets and rugs lying under furniture
  • Closet corners, back walls, and drawer bottoms

Step 2: Treating affected textiles

Infested and suspicious garments must be treated to kill eggs, larvae, and moths:

  • Washing at 60 °C: Everything that can withstand a 60-degree wash should be washed hot. This temperature reliably kills all stages of moth development.
  • Freezing: Delicate textiles that cannot be hot washed (cashmere, silk, fur) should be sealed in freezer bags and placed in the freezer at –18 °C for at least 72 hours.
  • Heat treatment: Alternatively, infested textiles can be packaged in black garbage bags and placed in direct sunlight on a hot summer day. All moth stages die at 50 °C and above.

Step 3: Thoroughly cleaning the closet

Vacuum the empty closet thoroughly – all corners, crevices, screw holes, and the back wall. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag immediately afterwards, as it may contain eggs and larvae. Then wipe the closet with vinegar water and let it dry completely.

Step 4: Setting up pheromone traps

Pheromone traps attract male clothing moths with synthetic sex attractants and catch them on an adhesive surface. They primarily serve to monitor infestation: if the traps remain empty for several weeks, the control was successful. If moths continue to be caught, further measures must be taken.

Natural remedies for moths in the wardrobe

In addition to the measures mentioned above, natural fragrances can help deter moths in the wardrobe:

  • Lavender sachets: The scent of lavender is unpleasant for clothing moths. Place dried lavender flowers in cotton bags and distribute them throughout the closet. Replace the sachets every 3–4 months or refresh the scent with essential lavender oil.
  • Cedarwood: Cedarwood rings, balls, or blocks emit essential oils that repel moths. Occasionally sand the surface to renew the scent.
  • Neem oil: A drop of neem oil on a cotton ball in the closet has a repellent effect on moths.
  • Walnut leaves: Dried walnut leaves between clothing are also said to deter moths – a traditional home remedy whose effectiveness is, however, limited.

Another natural approach is the use of parasitic wasps (Trichogramma evanescens). These tiny, completely harmless insects parasitize clothing moth eggs and eliminate the next generation.   • High-quality wool fabrics: Cashmere, merino wool, and angora are particularly susceptible due to their fine fiber structure. A single eaten cashmere sweater can cause damage of over 100 euros.
  • Furs and skins: Real fur coats, fur collars, and lambskins are ideal food sources for moth larvae.
  • Silk: Silk scarves, blouses, and dresses are also infested, although less frequently than wool.
  • Feather beds and down pillows: The feathers contain keratin and can be eaten by moth larvae.
